Kadija (George) Sesay is a brilliant woman--a literary activist one of the most important voices, educators, and publishers for black writers in the UK and in Africa. She has given writers of color a place in literature today, and a voice to speak out and for their fiction to be heard. Her first published work, however, falls short.

Sesay puts together an interesting story with these poems--educating readers on private fostering, (West) African history, and the diaspora--and explores many of the themes and complexities linked to being born in Sierra Leone but growing up in the UK, with two sets of parents, two histories, two pasts. The problem, though, is that the poetry itself (the way this incredible story is told) often falls somewhere between post-modernly original and childish ("Sunday School, Sunday Roast" for example with "slicesofwell-donebeefwithYorkshirepud"), which causes me to stop often and ask- "so what?"

At the same time, there is some brilliant poetry here, an exploration of childhood and adulthood, racism, and migration (my favorites like "Uncivilised" and "Angela"). Sesay has an ability to include her own personal experience, and at the same time speak to millions, letting her characters speak for themselves and each reader draw his own conlucions.

If you're interested in literatures of the African Diaspora, or of Western Africa, or of black British literature, I would say--get this book. It's a unique story that will entertain and educate. If you're a die hard poetry fan, however, avoid this, as you'll only come away disappointed.

Its a page turner, I read it in a couple hours and I was very much pleasantly surprise by the author )
Gripping and moving at the same time, these poems confide soul secrets of an important contemporary cosmopolitan woman of Sierra Leonean and British upbringing.
