This book did not end up as I had thought it would. I expected lust and no love. I expected a brainless woman saved by a hunky alien. I expected an entertaining read but it being predictable. There was lust, a hunky alien, and the story was entertaining, but I discovered a lot more.*Some Spoilers Ahead*
With Jenny, I found her brilliant. Her emotions felt very real to me. She didn't fall into an instant trust/lust relationship with Fly. Their partnership took its time building, and by the time they were close, I understood it. She was kind and what I liked best, she stuck by her man, er, alien. When things got tough not once did she do something cruel and stupid to Fly because she was uncertain about a problem. I respected her for that.
Fly was a great character. Definitely rough around the edges, but as Jenny did, the more I learned about him, the more I liked him. He didn't become this perfect guy right away, but then, he never did. He didn't change that much because of Jenny, and she didn't ask him to. Her and Fly had a great relationship.
Bodie and Matt were fine with me while they stayed out of the picture. Once they became a problem though, they ticked me off. Yeah they were important for their roles, but I think the story could have gone in a better direction without them. Also, I disliked how long the story circulated around them. I sort of wanted to yell at Fly to kill them already. The fact that their attitudes changed so drastically toward Fly after one event frustrated me. Then once things were settled...there came the ending. After all that time of dealing with those two, I didn't get to really read how everyone worked together, how they faced hardships as one. Not fair.
Overall, a great read. Characters, even the ones I disliked, were well written. The story had some slow points, but I enjoyed the gradual development of relationships and solutions. My only problem was that while Jenny and Fly went at it like rabbits, there was no pregnancy. Maybe it's because I watched "Blue Lagoon" recently, which this book reminded me a bit of, but Jenny and Fly never had a parenting discussion. That was disappointing. I never even found out if they were compatible in that way. I was hoping to see a family thing emerge, and I think it would have helped me accept the ending better. Still, Eden deserves four stars no doubt. I enjoyed it and recommend it to whomever.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book. It is both good sci-fi about survival on an alien world, and a good romance novel where the romance is with a scary and dangerous alien man. I liked that the romance took time and developed and that the book was not just erotica with a little plot thrown in and cardboard cutout characters. This may also be characterized as a Beauty and the Beast story for those who like books with that theme.
If I had any small criticism it is that the conflict between the alien and the younger astronaut resolved a little too neatly.
The world with its exotic plants and animals was fascinating. I also loved that the heroine, while strong and courageous, was not any better at being stranded on an alien world than most of us would be. Her emotional responses to being stranded, as she became more aware of the dangers around her, and realized how little equipped she was for survival - were wonderfully written. I thought it made the story much more realistic than if she had been a super heroine.
I visited the author's website and am happy to see that she is planning a sequel. She said it may be released around October 2013. I am looking forward to reading the sequel.
"Homicidal plants" with pulsing veins, screaming trees, ice, two suns and more than an alien spacecraft on a planet named Eden. But more than that, Louise Wise proved to me that she can write an attention grabbing book without considering those who have no attraction or love for sci fi.
I don't like science fiction. So why did I want to read this book? The title and book cover got me started, then the first chapter got me on track with Jenny and Bodie who were being thrown hither and dither on a space craft and her introduction to an android named Kate who "has more brain cells than the entire population of the earth" (so say her architect Matt,) and as capricious as any woman. After that juncture, I am hooked on the story itself. I admire the author's imagination and her keen insight for human nature.
I also liked the fact that the chapters were short.
I was intrigued by the way this author tampered with my lust for mystery solving, and impressed by her ability to make me forget I was reading a book in a category I never knew I could enjoy. She managed to create a lonely, depressed alien named Fly whose observations revealed a more evolved race of humans that triggered fractured memories of his earth lessons as he hid in places where he wouldn't be seen.
The struggle to survive permeates the story and stimulates a reader's want for answers which kept me reading until the surprise met the end. Louise Wise presents an assortment of talents as a writer who knows how to hold your attention. Visit Eden and find out why I give this book 5 stars.
