I gave this book 3 stars because I found it entertaining enough, but I will probably not read anymore in this series. First of all, I have lost respect for Natalie. How many knocks on the head and attempted drownings will it take for her to learn a lesson. If I was John, I would look for someone with a little more common sense and respect/trust in others. Another thing is when will she lock up her dang key cabinet? After the first time someone was suspected of sneaking into another person's room that would have been the first thing on my to-do list. I get that the author has to create scenarios (like no cell service and no way off the island in a storm) for the plot to keep on, but while she was worried about moving the story along she forgot to keep the characters personalities believable/likeable. I'm sad because i love the setting and some of the characters, but I see the reviews for book 5 and they seem to go along with my complaints about book 4.Tags : Berried to the Hilt (Gray Whale Inn Mystery) [Karen MacInerney] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. After what I considered two very poorly structured predecessors, this fourth entry in MacInerney’s Gray Whale Inn series returns to the quality that I experienced in the first book. Her characterizations of the main protagonists have returned to a level that can be both believed and respected. And she has, this time, been able to more seamlessly integrate the murder mystery with the island’s history and with the daily trials and tribulations of our protagonists’ lives.
Natalie and John are now engaged and have joined together to turn the Gray Whale Inn from a bed-and-breakfast into a full-service hotel. Natalie has been coerced into judging the highly political annual cranberry cook-off to be held in about a week. And Adam, the lobsterman boyfriend of Natalie’s niece, Gwen, has discovered the curved timber of a long-lost vessel caught in his traps. Within a few days two competing salvage crews have descended on both the site of the shipwreck and the Inn.
One group is a team of marine archeologists from the local university and has been called in by Adam. The other group is a team of commercial treasure hunters from out of state who were contacted surreptitiously by Adam’s hired hand. Due to the ruthless mercenary intent and site destruction favored by the commercial salvors, the two teams have a contentious history. Within two days, one of the partners in the commercial team is dead, stabbed in the back with a curved blade and left floating near the site of the shipwreck.
There is no dearth of people with reasons to hate the dead man. Both of his partners as well as the two researchers from the university have ample reason to want Gerald dead. But it is a local boatwright who is jailed after the authorities find the centuries-old cutlass with which he publically threatened the man. The cutlass has the boatwright’s fingerprints on it and he found the body without any witnesses present.
Putting little stock in the possible motives of the other people involved in the salvage operation, the police essentially close the case. So Natalie and John begin investigating on their own in hopes of providing sufficient evidence for Eleazer’s lawyer to present a defense of reasonable doubt. Now, if Natalie would just learn to leave a note or tell someone where she is going every time she walks out the door, her chances of ferreting out the bad guy while avoiding head injuries and an early grave would greatly improve!
MacInerney expertly weaves the techniques and legalities of marine salvage into the plot. She writes an implied but subdued sexual element into the story with no scenes more heated than a long hug and a kiss on the top of the head. She crafts an intricate mystery of motives, means and opportunity and a blood-chilling denouement of that mystery. And she makes you believe that Maine’s equivalent of the Black Pearl is alive and well.
Murder on the Rocks (Gray Whale Inn Mysteries, No. 1),Dead and Berried (Gray Whale Inn Mysteries, No. 2),Murder Most Maine (Gray Whale Inn Mysteries, No. 3), and Berried to the Hilt (The Gray Whale Inn Mysteries) are the titles in this series.
I recommend starting at the beginning.
In the past I have always given five stars to this series. Why only three this time?
1)Character development is not there. Of course, we know the main characters. So maybe I'm asking too much. And I do like the caring and loving attitude always present. The relationships of Natalie and John, Gwen and Adam, Claudette and Eleazor White, and Ingrid and Evan Sorenson.
In this outing poor Eleazor is a suspect in the murder of a treasure hunter, and poor Evan has gone missing.
2)Although we learn new things, as usual in MacInerney's books, this time we don't learn much, and this time she tells us the same thing twice Natalie asks the meaning of concretions and is told
" 'Concretions form when the metal rusts, and all kinds of things - - debis - - stick to it, forming a hard layer around the object.'"{Large Print Edition, Page 40}.
But she asks again, and again is told(by someone else) '' 'It's called a concretion; the artifact gets buried in it, along with anything nearny. It can envelop not just the metal. but any object close to it - - even leather and wood.'"{Page 163}.
3)The recipes are great. But once again, some are mentioned and never given. In this case, it is a salad dressing. A food critic asks for the recipe {Page 293}, and later it is called "famous." {Page360}. But the recipe is not included.
4)Animals are barely noted. Poor little Biscuit, Natalie's cat is seen once or twice. However, the inclusion of a very social cat, Mr. Snuggles, is a nice touch. And the goats are back.
5)Ghosts don't appeal to me. So the ghost element turned me off as well. It did not seem believable.
Having said this, please know that I am looking forward to the next installment of the Gray Whale Inn series. Thank you.
This series must be read in order. The first book is Murder On The Rocks. The second book is Dead And Berried. The third book is Murder Most Maine. This is the fourth book. I can't wait to read Blueberry Blues!
When an old shipwreck is found off of Cranberry Island, by her niece's boyfriend Adam, at first all Natalie can think about is business during the slow season. It means she will be able to pay the bills and the mortgage and maybe put some money way for her wedding. Can this really be a boon? Or is it a curse in disguise? Why are there two groups to investigate the shipwreck when Adam only called one? How did the others find out about it? Will she and John actually set a date? This engagement can't fall apart like the last one did... Could it?
I gave this book 3 stars because I found it entertaining enough, but I will probably not read anymore in this series. First of all, I have lost respect for Natalie.
