As a stand-alone book, I enjoyed this. As a massive fan of the Enderverse, this book had me raising my eyebrows. This book seems to contradict many major points established in Ender's Game.**Spoiler Alert**
In Ender's Game, belief in the existence of the Hive Queen was something that got Mazer "laughed to silence" by authorities after the Final Battle. In this book, Mazer and Bingwen PROVE that the Hive Queen exists before the Second Formic War even begins, and take videos of one of her "Daughters".
In Ender's Game, the idea that the Hive Queen is the ruling and animating will/intelligence in the Formics is something that Mazer introduces to Ender as a new concept that is not widely understood/accepted by the Fleet or humanity, a hundred years after the Second Formic War. In this book, most everyone already agrees that the Formics have a hive mind, controlled by one intelligent being, even before Bingwen shoots video proving the Hive Queen's existence.
The casual use of the Ansible by various military commanders and the Ansible falling into Pirate hands makes the idea of it being a total secret 100 years later when Ender/Bean learn about it, is pretty out there.
In Ender's Game, the first contact with the Formics is supposed to be when they blacked out Eros, and Eros was supposed to have been the Formic's forward post, won by 1000 marines fighting through tunnels to eradicate the Formics. This is how we supposedly stole their tech. In this book, they do black out a random asteroid, but it isn't Eros, and the 1000 marines who die are no where in sight, nor is any of the tech Mazer talks about.
Finally, the existence of Daughters of the Hive Queen as "battle generals" brings up a huge point -- in Ender's Game our main strategic advantage according to Mazer was that we have "greater available intelligence" that we can bring to bear on each battle, because we have many commanders, while the Formics only have the Queen. Having Daughters of the Hive Queen seems to blow this out of the water.
I know this seems really nit-picky. I did actually enjoy the book on its own, but the contradictions and inconsistencies between the existing Enderverse and this book constantly brought me up short, and took me out of the story.

The Swarm The Second Formic War Volume 1 eBook Orson Scott Card Aaron Johnston Reviews
Book number one of a one book series of an alien invasion of the Solar System and the Earth. Note that there are around 17 books in the Enderverse now. I read the well formatted and bound MMPB. I am eagerly awaiting more books in the second prequel series.
This is the first book of the second prequel series to _Ender's Game_. The first prequel series to _Ender's Game_, the First Formic War, started with a single Formic scout ship entering the Solar System. It ended with over 400 million dead, mostly in mainland China. Now there is a much larger Formic colony ship on its way to Earth.
When _Ender's Game_ was published, the IF (International Fleet) was a smooth running military organization capable of protecting the Solar System and taking the war to the Formic home worlds. But in the beginning, it was anything but organized. Turf battles and sheer incompetence as millions of land soldiers and sea sailors were moved into outer space over a very short period.
Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston are unusual in that their protagonists actually care about right and wrong and are guided by moral frameworks, unlike so many other science fiction authors. As a result, their books are particularly appealing. The Swarm is no exception. The pace is fast moving, the cause is hopeless, but people in the story are determined to try anyway. Real life is reflected in some especially cruel and callous people who focus on themselves at the expense of others. However, several characters who you might initially label as bad or evil begin to exhibit some redeeming qualities. All of this makes the people more believable, as human beings are rarely completely one sided on the spectrum or ethics. As the story closes, you realize that the major tension that has been building is still unresolved, so we'll just have to wait for the next book in the series.
This was a page-turner for me. I have read some other books where people ripped apart details of the science, characters, etc. I am a voracious reader. I read books for their entertainment value. Just like a good movie, I will read a book at least twice over the course of a few months. The idea is to let the details sink in, then go back and fill in details I have e forgotten, and draw connections, etc. That I missed the first time. I typically read 2 books at a time, 3 or more sometimes. With this book, since it was on my app, I read it in about 5 days, short stretches while on vacation, traveling, etc. No spoilers, just read the darn book, but read the first prequil trilogy first. Oh. I HATED WHERE IT ENDED!!! Ok. Gripe is done...
After reading all of OSC's other books in this continuum, I was tickled to see it released. As anticipated, I wasn't disappointed. Another one of his books that makes me sit reading far too long, but long enough. Difficult to put down. I recommend this one highly, if I wasn't so stingy I'd call it a 5. I only knock it down because it needed a HUMAN proofreader. Spellcheck does not fix everything.
I enjoyed the story, but wish the prose were a little better. It could use some copy-editing. THere are faddish cliches, like saying "that said" when "but" or "yet" would do. There are grammatical errors, as in this sentence, where "may" should be "might" "The tital forces wouldn't be as strong, and the resultant breach may not be as large, but the hope was that the team could still penetrate the hull and fulfill the mission." I don't remember the Ender entries authored solely by Card as having any of these awkward touches, so maybe he's not much involved with the line-editing of these prequels.
