I'm a sucker for come-of-age YA books and finding goodnes ignoring the dystopian trends is not an easy task. "Portrait" delivers. One of my favorite YA books: clean, hopeful, engrossing. This was a real novel coming out at the time where YA was formalistic with fake, Hollywood-esq conflict and unlikeable main characters. As a runner in high school, I identified with the main character quite a bit, except for that she is a girl part, ha, ha. But, anyway, I've actually read this book twice, rare for me in the YA genre. I would classify it as an above-the-fray summer read.
Chicoine weaves a theme not seen in many YA books. The main character struggles to define herself outside of surviving the bad deal life has given her, entering the adult world of living life rather than simply overcoming it. If you like to read books with real character growth, this one will fill the bill easily.

Portrait of a Girl Running Portraits Book 1 edition by J B Chicoine Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book is not my usual kind of story to read, but I liked the story line and got a sample. Bought it, Read it and absolutely loved it.
One of the best books I've ever read! The sequel as just as great! This is definitely a book i will read over and over again!
Intriguing character interactions and plot twists
Just got done rereading Portrait of a Girl Running AGAIN.. Brushing up on the first two books of the trilogy... Even better the second time around. Getting ready for Portrait of a Girl Adrift. Leila is a girl I just want to keep on reading about!!! Thank you for your wonderful writing JB Chicoine )
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. There are just so many wonderful aspects of Girl Running that take this book far beyond simply being a student-teacher novel. It possesses elements of jazz and photography that are expertly descriptive and so enticing that at many points, I thought I could actually hear the music. Chicoine’s characters are very in-depth and truly unforgettable. Girl Running has many themes that are intricately woven in the story and it has many touching moments that are also unforgettable. It was very difficult for me to put this book down and I immediately jumped into the sequel when finished.
I loved this portrait of a young girl suddenly forced to face life alone and to work out her own identity. The heroine is believable and intriguing. There is no need for crude language or graphic sex although life is depicted with brutal honesty.
The characters live and breathe on the page and in the imagination. They are woven seamlessly with the plot, which rises and falls along the lines of their actions, reactions, and psychological triumphs and challenges. The setting is keenly felt, but usefully employed, never distracting.
It’s not an easy book to categorize. The prose is skilled and rich and interspersed with wry humor that is sure to please. It is at times suspenseful, includes some romance, and all focuses on young adulthood. It doesn’t fall neatly into any of those genres though, because the themes it develops are so universal and account for the stories wide appeal.
Though books don’t come with soundtracks, looking up and playing some of the songs and artists mentioned certainly enhanced my reading experience!
