While there is a certain degree of knowledge I possess about religion, there is still a lot for me to learn, so getting to read stories like this that not only depicts religion in a specific way but also shows a compelling fiction that is very attractive to read, it works for me.
The imagination and creativity here is tremendous, seriously, to take biblical references on a whole new level and add a certain element of surprise and action works just fine, and of course it never loses its main focus, life will always throw you doubts and tasks to test your faith, you just need to keep believing and be better, stronger, as your faith demands it.
This is an unusual book no doubt, but gems like this are hard to find, especially in the delicate field of religion, so I encourage you, whether you are a religious person or not, read this book, is an inspiring book with a lot of action and fiction that not only puts imagination on a new level but also inspires your faith.

The moment I started reading Gods and Proxies, I felt like I started a new version of the Old Testament. Names have changed, but the essence of the word of God is there. It's like historical fiction of some of the earliest stories we have. It is as if the author used the Book of Exodus and added a depth to characters and their point of view. A deeper story makes the reader think more of how Moshe (or Moses) felt when seeing the land that he would never step foot on or Y'hoshua (or Joshua) and his wonder and fear in the god that held back the flooded waters so that his tribe could march to battle. There is so much about faith in an unseen god and a battle that seems impossible to win. It has been an interesting read just on a new perspective to an old story.
I feel like this one was a tad predictable once I figured out that this was the story of the Jews' Exodus from Egypt with a big dangerous asteroid added to the mix. Maybe it's a sort of "alternative history" set during Biblical times? Something that could have happened but some of the more spectacular details somehow never made it into the Bible? I don't know. The narrator makes a little bit too big of a deal over how he never abandoned his post. But it was fairly well-written and I liked the characters, minus maybe "The Watcher" who came off as maybe too much like the Marvel Comics character with more of a religious slant. The action was fast-paced enough once the author had introduced most of the main characters. Overall, enjoyable read and I'd recommend it to anyone who has gotten sick of the usual lineup of "Biblical fiction" because this one is different enough to be interesting.
There is something biblical about this story; it reminds me of the Old Testament. Even the names of the characters seem to have their roots in Judaism. The people live a harsh life, always just one step away from war. We follow a young soldier, Othniel, as he grows up the hard way. He has a burning belief in his God and will fight when he is called upon, but has fallen in love with the precious daughter of the tribal chief and must negotiate this new relationship as well.
Love fantasy novels that take you to other worlds? Good vs evil? A chance to cheer for the underdog or greek mythology? Then this is totally for you! While these seem like obvious themes, the overarching theme can easily be brought back to Christianity. Much like Lord of the Rings or The Chronicles of Narnia. If you are spiritual, great, you will probably find much meaning out of this book. If not, it may twinge a bit but I think you can still find enjoyment in reading the story overall. It also give you a lot of information and parts to what is going on, which can certainly help you feel like you are more involved and within the story.

While this book does not exactly hit the nail on the head for me, I love Greek mythology but this was a bit too much action and not enough drama, I felt like it was a great read for someone who does enjoy these sort of stories.
MR Kayser has written a most unusual novel in his work with Gods & Proxies. The novel is a science fiction recasting of the biblical accounts of the Israelites entering the land of Canaan, with the addition of an impending asteroid.

I would be curious to get familiar with Kayser's source material for this imaginative version of the biblical books of Deuteronomy and Joshua, since the names, descriptions, and concepts discussed therein are almost kabbalistic at times.

I have often wondered what it would be like to reshape biblical narratives along the lines of a novel painted in the thematic colors of operatic science fiction, and I think Kayser achieves that here.

The premise may be a little odd for some, but I found it intriguing and enjoyable.
Even though there are many religious and biblical references in this book, it is still basically a straight up fantasy novel. The author made it epic, huge, with big stakes on characters shoulders. Of course, if you have Gods fighting in your book, you better know how to make it epic.
The characters are fine, no one in particular stood out for me as someone original or will I remember them for much longer, but they are ok. Main part for me was the imaginative world and action, and that is written very well, I really enjoyed the battles. I can see this book spawning other sequels, it is a very good use of religious background and that makes it, at least for me, more interesting than just another generic mages and dwarves and orcs type of fantasy novel. Good read for those who would enjoy that type of literature, for sure.
