It was a great look into Indiana in the very very late 1890s or first yeas of the 1900s - Copywrite in 1902. Does not read like a modern novel but extremely well worth reading.Product details

Not Booth Tarkington's best
They are called "Classics" for a reason.
did not like it -did not finish--I usually finish all books started
I'll admit, it was a little slow until the love story picked up, but turned into a great story worth reading.
tarkington is timeless. wish i'd have learned of him sooner. i would have enjoyed him even more when i was younger!
It has been more than 35 years since I first read this book; when I was a teen ager. It made an impression on me then - especially the last half. I liked the story. Having read it again recently I came away with a similar impression, though more subdued. I can see now much of it is overly dramatic and somewhat unrealistic, but I must admit that I still like the story.
I wanted to like this book more. But the characters were too "perfect" especially the heroine. The story was too sappy. There are some very well written passages however I only finished the book after skimming the last two chapters. Don't waste your time.
